Create a new icon, using the "run as property" and set it to run as root
(I know KDE supports this, and probably Gnome. Other desktop enviro's
I've never had to do it in, so have never bothered trying).
You will still have to type in a password to be able to run the program,
but at least it will stop you from having to switch to an alternative
users session everytime.
The other alternative that will work from KDE is to run the command
using 'kdesu'. So it will be something like 'kdesu xsane' in the Run
dialog or as your user in a command shell. Doing the above fix in KDE
will do the same, as it uses kdesu to run the program.
