Not that it's much help, but Feisty definately won't boot when strange
hardware (an old Quantum Fireball 2GB HDD) is present on any of a
handful of current Dell desktops and servers that I have; but Dapper
worked just fine.

So either there's something relating to IDE that's been dropped from
the current kernels, or Feisty is broken under some new circumstances.

Perhaps you should try an install from the Alternate CD instead? I
didn't have a chance to try that in my case (as I didn't want an
install, only a temporary environment from LiveCD) ...
