how is that different from lvm snapshots?
lvm snapshots work with any filesystem. accessing older snapshots
requires mounting them i think, but that's just the interface. i wonder
whether the snapshoting itself is more or less efficient.

there is, erm was :-(, also linlogfs which did something similar without
requiring manual snapshoting.
