Go indie... they even have OGG and FLAC (see wikipedia)
http://www.ind-music.com/
google "indie music"
These are often startup bands or bands whose philosophy equates to the
music equivalent of OSS philosophy. Some even work to the philosophy
that a band should make its money from live performances, and give away
recordings as they are lower value anyway, being either plasticised
(studio recordings) or second hand (live recordings). Many with this
philosophy object to the recordinmg industry taking the majority of the
money for the bands work.
Some give one or two free tracks away to get you hooked enough to buy
the cd or all the tracks.
Of course you may be looking for known music, i like finding "the
diamond in the rough".
IANAL, but IIUC if you buy your "ordinary" music from overseas sites,
you are screwed, basically because the NZ recording industry did not get
their whack. Don't quote me on that.

Some newer players will play mp3 CD's, especially DVD players. If you
want normal music CDs, use "Audacity" to convert to 44.1KHz Stereo WAV
first. FLAC is the best type to convert.
