[nzlug] Setting up net access for temp PC.

Hi,

I've got a couple of PC's here that I need to fix for friends, and I'm
wanting a simple way to get them network access whilst I'm working on
them on my second monitor/keyboard etc (since they need Windows
re-installs).

The easiest way I can think of is to make use of the second NIC in my
desktop machine, and use a crossover cable to connect the temporary
machine to this second NIC and configure it to access the network this
way (I don't have a spare switch, and I can't really afford 50m of CAT5
cable for a couple of one off job's). This would be similar to
selecting the two NIC's in Windows and creating what they refer to as a
network bridge (although apparently under Linux this may be called
something else from what I've already looked at).

For reference the layout of the network is currently:

                         --- Switch ---- FlatNetwork
                        /
Internet ---- DSLRouter ---- GatewayBox ---- MyDesktopPC (via CrossOver)
                        \
                         --- WirelessRouter ---- WirelessPC's

The layout I want to achieve is:

                         --- Switch ---- FlatNetwork
                        /
Internet ---- DSLRouter ---- GatewayBox ---- MyDesktopPC (via CrossOver)
---- TempPC
                        \
                         --- WirelessRouter ---- WirelessPC's

I'm looking to give the temporary PC access to the internet as well as
Samba shares on my Desktop and on the GatewayBox. I would do this over
RDP or VNC, but because the machines both require a re-install of
Windows this obviously can't be done.

Can anyone help, or point me in the right direction of what I need to do?

Thanks,

Andrew Bruce
