ISOs automount if Safari is set to allow auto opening.

PITA because it doesn't belong to any application, so if you manage to
lose the window you have to hide everything to find it again.

Yes, but I'm not aware of any non-OSX tools that do  it. A darwin
install in a VM would do it of course, but then you have to have the
fun of playing with hdiutil.
