A major component of a distro's overall quality is the size of its
userbase.

When one is struggling to get program X working with hardware item Y,
adding in kernel patch Z and hacking n config scripts full of ASCII
hieroglyphics, it's major reassurance to be able to google through
mailing lists and find some other poor buggers who've struggled with the
same problem, and one or two who have got it working and posted their
howtos.

With a smaller userbase, the well-written HOWTOs, the graphical config
utilities and the nice HTML manuals tend to disappear, to be replaced by
IRC channels and mailing lists full of techno-snobs yelling 'ffs! rtfs
you $&#@%^ n00b!!!'
