Since you threw down the gauntlet....

http://www.linuxcertified.com/linux_laptops.html
Not in NZ, but at 0.78 exchange rate, $US699 = less than NZ$1,000

To quote their site " No Windows Tax! Most laptops come with built-in
cost of Windows, regardless of whether you want to use Windows or not.
LC2000 series is free of any such baggage. You only pay for Windows if
you want to use it."

Or if the US is too far and you want to buy from Australia -

If there is such a demand for Linux on Laptops surely there is a
business opportunity for somebody who is willing to resell OEM
laptops...

Where, pray tell, does one go to get a laptop that's not made by one of
the usual suspects? Or get one at something approximating a reasonable
price? It's all very well to say that you should support local business,

and that you save money by not paying the "MS Tax", but the reality is
that you spend far more on the hardware from these small manufacturers
than you lose on the "MS Tax" levied by buying a laptop from one of the
big names.
