I remember having to recompile the OpenBSD kernel 5 years ago for one the early USB ADSL modems. Bloody nightmare, took me about two weeks to get it right (and a nice frenchman who ssh'd into my machine from France to set up the correct driver at 4 am in the morning), and from that day I have never ever bought an ADSL modem with a USB slot ever again.
