Telstra don't DHCP to clients, or at least they didn't when I used
them a year ago. If you have a buggy modem like I did DHCP can leak
from the management network, but it'll do you no good as the modem
won't route the traffic.

You need to manually configure the details Telstra gave you. It'll
look something like this:
IP address: 202.0.62.169
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 202.0.62.1

If you don't have all that information then you'll need to call
Telstra and ask for it.

Check 192.168.100.1, it's the cable modem's management interface. It
will tell you if the modem is connected, but don't fiddle with
anything as stuff will break.

If the modem is USB be cautious. My DSL modem does both USB and
ethernet, but the modem drops the USB randomly - the bug is in the
modem, not my machine, much testing has confirmed that.
