[nzlug] 'MS Tax' versus Commerce Commission

But we all do have a choice!

I still don't get why people "must" order a Dell/HP/Acer, and not the
likes of Quay Computers (or another local assembler / retailer).

>From http://www.quay.co.nz/systems/future.htm "Downgrades - No MS
Windows Vista Home premium less $165" (An upgrade in my book). If you do
that then Microsoft will get no money from the sale. How clear is that?
The OS license costs you $165. Don't buy it if you don't want it.

I guess it comes back to the original point I was trying to make. People
don't want to pay the extra to get a custom local build.

But the original poster is correct - it is bloody hard to get a laptop
sans OS.

And even then, the argument could be made that "Windows costs $1000, but
we're prepared to sell it to you for $200 *iff* you buy it with a new PC
for
$1" applies, regardless of the licensing-vs.-selling model.
