Sounds like you may have a USB keyboard, in which case it won't work until
drivers are loaded (which happens when the OS starts loading). If this is
the case, some BIOSes have an option whereby the BIOS will load a small
driver to allow USB keyboards to be used at power-on. Check your BIOS
manual.

AFAIK if you are connected directly to Telstra's cable modem you have to
configure the interface with the IP address and other settings that Telstra
gave you.
How many ethernet ports do you have on the PC? If it is only one, then
only eth0 is available to you. Changing settings for eth1 will have no
effect. If you have more than one, then make sure you know which is which.
