My guess with your keyboard is that it is a USB keyboard and you will need
to enable some sort of 'legacy USB keyboard support' in your Bios. As for
the more important issue some more details would probably help:
 - what sort of cable modem (model idealy, but at least is it
internal/external, USB/ethernet etc)
 - any other local network details

Debian instructions should work fine with Ubuntu (under the covers they are
almost identical, the less graphical the guide the more likely it will work
on multiple linux distributions)
