I can't think of any way to respond in detail to your post without

* I respect your choice of distro, as I would respect anyone

* Yes, I do use Slackware for my "serious" work, but I still 
experiment with other distros. In my previous posts, I 
deliberately avoided mentioning Slackware. I am not trying to 
promote Slackware. The promotion of Slackware as "generic" Linux 
would be just as bad as Ubuntu, even if for slightly different 
reasons.
* If Slackware suddenly disappeared, I could make do with several 
of the other distros out there. I expect that if this hypothetical 
situation came about because of some pressure to "rationalise" the 
number of Linux distros, I would probably jump to BSD in disgust.
* Many of the people that I have encountered who have tried a free 
Ubuntu CD don't really have a concept of what a distro is: They 
insert a Ubuntu CD and assume that it _is_ "generic" Linux.
* I am embarrassed when these people tell me that this "generic" 
Linux thingee that they have been playing with is a load of s**t 
(implying that I, as a Linux user, must be crazy to persist with it).
* I am happy to assist any newbie to install or maintain _any_ 
distro: Although I have my own preferences, I respect their choice.
