Good morning,
I am working in a school and the situation is not good.
The school administration applications (MUSAC) has only windows
versions.
On the desktop/office side you have the compatibility issues (M$
document formats).
On the teaching side most of the teachers has "one" favorite
application which has no acceptable OSS alternative or the teachers
do not want to learn/use something else.
Our support companies do not support any kind of Linux or other OSS
solutions and I think it is true about the other companies as well.
The Active Directory is not the best but the user management can be a
hell on Linux/BSD with 1500+ users.
Linux can be a very good alternative on the server side (web, mail,
firewall, proxy) and maybe every school has at least one Linux server.
