Not answering your original question (but following from Martin's 
comment), I have used, and can recommend 'soupermail'.  It uses a config 
file, and can do some pretty complex things although is relatively 
simple to set up (...if you can run your own cgi scripts).

I can provide help if you get stuck, or provide some sample configs... 
depending on what you want to do.
