Hi Vik, I use a program called mail-notification (it's in Synaptic) 
which works really well in Gnome.  It's not a gDesklet widget, but adds 
an icon in the system tray when there's mail, and pops up a little 
dialog containing the sender and the subject when mail arrives- very 
handy, and the best of a handful I tried.
