Hi RJ,
The short of it is: your current setup is not likely to work in Linux.
Here's the problem. For you to use the router that you have in usb
mode, you need a driver. However, because there's an ethernet port
already there on the router and doesn't require a driver, no one's
going to develop a driver for it. It's just not worth the hassle.
Although it's probably a good idea to start learning about networks,
the costs at this stage aren't going to be able to justify the outlay
for the cost of equipment - unless you already have the equipment
needed?? If you have a box in the middle - a small box with lots of
flashing LED's - of the two computer's - I.E. each computer connects
up to this box, you already have the equipment (it's most likely a hub
or a switch which in a network that size there really isn't going to
be any noticeable difference).
Unfortunately learning about networks is probably easier when you do
it practically - my first exposure to it was from LAN gaming back when
I was 16 or so (damn.... more than 10 years ago now - ouch *long live
doom*)
So yeah, your best option at this stage is going to be to connect the
router directly to the second computer. Sharing it with a linux
machine is something I'm not so sure about though I've heard is pretty
easy.
About the distribution of choice: I'd recommend getting your toes wet
first by using a live distribution. It runs straight off a cd without
writing anything to the harddrive. Knoppix is probably the most famous
of the live cds and, for me, the most likely to work, though there are
now lots of 'em around. Each distribution seems to come out with their
own. I couldn't stand the SuSe live cd myself and Ubuntu's I just
found frustrating - but it's all about choice.
Good luck.
Nevyn.
