I was reading
http://www.techtree.com/India/Guides/The_Best_of_Firefox_Extensions/551-78309-584.html
and saw they mentioned cooliris, which does basically what you talk
about above.
You hover over a link, then move the mouse to point at the cooliris icon
which appears next to the link, and a new overlay is created with the
webpage in it. Just installed it and it seems to work pretty well
