Magically without CDs or running things might imply UPnP, MSs
auto-magical network discovery system, which allows things like IM
software to pinhole firewall ports on a router without user involvement.
There are projects for linux - not sure what tools, etc are available or
whether they're any help at all - http://pupnp.sourceforge.net/ is a start.
DHCP messages you should be able to watch in the logs though... that
would be easier :)
