Well, my 64-bit Edgy machine is a fairly typical install :) I don't think I've
done anything outside the package manager.

Yeah, so (IMHO, and based on what I need), it's better to not.

Well, there is a multiarch system in the works. I think it's taking a while to
get into Debian, and so it's not expected in Ubuntu until Feisy or the one
after that (if not further). But I don't know anything more than that about
it. I've heard rumours to the effect that some other non-deb distros may be a
bit further along in that respect.

This would be fairly easy if you had a 32-bit machine handy, I expect. There
is only one other program I've found that doesn't work in 64-bits (that's
open source), and that is because in the interests of optimisation they made
an assumption about pointer sizes. Many close-sourced programs have issues
however (no acrobat reader, flash doesn't work all that well), fortunately
none of them are vital for me at least ('cept flash, but I managed to make
that work mostly)

Well that's no fun! You're wasting half the bits :) Also, sometimes there are
technical reasons why you can't; apparently some machines just don't work so
well for random reasons.
