What sort of machine are you considering running?
At an approximate cost of 20c / kWh your $30 will buy you 150 kWh of
electricity. In an average month of 30 days that will cover 5 kWh per day
which represents a continuous consumption of 208W. In actual fact a PC
will use around 60W when running (without a monitor), or less than a third
of your estimate. It is true that the PSU may be rated at 200W or so, but
that is its maximum capability, not its typical consumption.
A mini-ITX motherboard will consume around 14W- my home server is a
mini-ITX which is on 24/7 and costs me less than 10 cents PER DAY or $3 per
month.
Can't help you with the syslog thing, but my SMC wireless box has the same
feature, so I'll watch this thread with interest.
