I think Dell's offer pretty good bang-for-your-buck, especially the 
"destop replacement" type notebooks.

Looking at Dell's site you can get a Core2Duo, 17" Screen, 2GB Ram, 
120GB HD, nVidia 7900 GS for $3800.

Unfortunately you ARE stuck with the MS tax though.  I have a similar 
one (brought about a year ago) and is very Linux friendly (except for 
the nVidia drivers, obviously) and works really well, no regrets.

Can you give us an indication of what price range, and what kind of 
stuff you would like to run on it?
