I don't think so, I started (at my own volition) in primary school, helped 
along when I got to intermediate and had teachers who knew it too, and gave 
me the resources I needed (i.e. an Apple IIc boot disk and BASIC reference 
manual). It did a world of good for my performance in maths.

I don't think there needs to be a class on it at that level, say. But I think 
it's about the best time to provide the opportunity for interested students.
