A guy I know in Auckland does a lot of the technical work for a firm that 
develops RFID tagging solutions for farming use. I've seen some of their 
gear, so this isn't a 'new' concept.  However I'm sure an elegant low-cost 
solution wouldn't necessarily be all-bad either.

(But lets note, this is not necessarily a new innovation; unless the way 
in which you're employing the gear is not yet commonplace, chances are 
there are already solutions for this in the commercial marketplace.)
