Note, on my home system (gutsy and not dialup) /etc/resolve.conf does
not exist.

Oh yes - most online discussions end up with a suggestion to use a
different method.

edubuntu uses gnome, kppp would have to be added offline... though I
suppose I could dig the repos and rewrite the sources.list accordingly.

there is also gnome-ppp and gtdial suggested but dammit: I *have* a
connection! There is no reason to believe that DNS will work with these
others either.
