Not only that, but when you update a kernel using a package manager, it can mess grub.conf/menu.lst.

A good method of multi-booting is to elect to install grub to the HDD partition /boot lives on (been a while, could get this wrong).
Only the first distro installed gets grub installed to mbr.
In *that* distros menu.lst, you add entries to *chainload* all the others much like you do with Windows.
This makes the setup scaleable, and each alters only it's own grub configuration.

Otherwise, you are forced to add entries for each distro and be very careful when one updates. You also need, I suspect, to add
a simlink pointing grub.conf to menu.lst ...
