They may have had one of the most high-profile software patents, but I
don't believe for a minute they invented them (and the wikipedia
article[1] doesn't mention them at all). And I can't find anything
about them selling mailing lists...

Nirvanix[2] is a new outift basically offering the same stuff as S3.
Slightly more expensive but it gets lost in the noise if you're only
talking a few GB.
