[nzlug] Blank screen wakeup (remotely)

Hi,
I've got a Linux box without keyboard or mouse connected to my TV to play
movies. The movies are started remotely.
When there has been no activity on the box, first the screen saver starts, and
after a longer time the screen becomes black. If keyboard or mouse were
connected, the blank screen would disappear immediately on a mouse movement
or pressed key.
If the screen is blank and I start a movie remotely, the blank screen stays,
although the movie starts (judging from the sound).
So far, I've been fixed this problem by switching virtual consoles with chvt:
... ; sudo chvt 1 ; sleep 1 ; sudo chvt 7 ; ...
Is there a more elegant way (like echo 1 >> /proc/<somefile>, or some
command)?
Cheers,
Raimund
