Downloading a deb and walking it over *must* be simpler that doing the
same with an entire distro - the option OP has decided on. There is also
the rt2x00 driver, which *does* work with smp kernels.

I suspect the decision in favour of rewarding the people who
automatically do what you want against facilitating the people who have
just annoyed you.
