Only for SUSE, but it's probably the same.

Nothing special is needed, plug in the drive, it's treated the same as e.g.
any usb storage gimmick, i.e. it's mounted and file manager windows pop up.
I do explicitly unmount before removing the drive, and encrypted partitions
need to be manually mounted (10.2 anyway). Nifty for big backups, and as
fast as the mobo can handle. You can't damage any SATA devices electrically
by plugging around. I don't use any special esata, just one of those
brackets which extend a mobo SATA port out the back. nforce4 chipset.
