I've been running my second level backups in this manner for the last 2+ years, using 4 SATA disks in caddies in rotation. Replacingt the disk caddy when umounted has worked faultlessly during this time.

I'm using promise sata drivers, and haven't updated the debian installation for quite some time ( 2.6.8 kernel ).
