Um, your machine runs what? And what are you connecting to it with and 
where from?

Assuming the home machine is some sort of Linux, then ensure that sshd 
is running.

Configure the router to forward port X to port 22 on the home machine. 
(Port X could be port 22 as well).

Assuming the remote machine is some sort of Windows install Putty and 
configure it to connect to port X on the router.
