I did some testing a while ago with the setup you mentioned, I found using
FTP or HTTP slowed the transfers down, (maybe due to protocol overheads/Disk
access/the server or client software) but never bothered to find out why.

I used nttcp to test throughput through a BSD firewall and got good results.
It does all it's work from RAM so disk access/ overhead was not an issue.
