Thanks to those who offered assistance.
Services restored about 0115 this morning via a very hard reboot.
Looks like a potential issue in the IDE Controller?  Lots of ext3 errors 
scrolling continuously on the console and no apparent ability to write to 
the disk when it died.

Only problem detected so far is some improperly closed tables in mysql, 
being looked into at present but a quick look implies that content is 
intact.
