Exactly what you said. Its fun for a short time, but then using it long 
term becomes an increasing burden because of the lack of package 
management. Uninstalling something can turn into a nightmare. Updates 
may not be clean because of old stuff sitting around. Thats why portage 
and gentoo :). Much of the docs on gentoo and LFS web sites are 
compatible as a result...
