Some people enjoy building things up from scratch; some people like
pre-built stuff.
Look at the flat-pack furniture market; you could buy a fully crafted
bookcase; you could make a flat-pack bookcase; or you could chop down a
tree and start there ...
It's a good learning experience; although I've heard people say that the
"Linux from Scratch" model is better to learn from than Gentoo.
It's also a good way to get in-depth understanding of the internals of
everything; Gentoo's documentation on how to get something working is
often the most detailed, especially when it concerns integrating a
couple of products.
