[nzlug] help - scanning problems

Hi all,

I tried to use my scanner (Mustek Bearpaw 1200CU) for the first time in
a few weeks and couldn't get anything to happen.

Before, I was scanning perfectly with xsane.

Symptoms:
 - sane-find-scanner shows the scanner as:
     found USB scanner (vendor=0x05d8, product=0x4002) at libusb:002:004
 - scanimage -L gives no output, not even with --verbose
 - usbview displays the scanner as 'unknown device'
 - the xsane, xscanimage and quiteinsane frontends all exit immediately
   after startup, whether I run them as user or root

Environment:
 - Debian unstable
 - have updated libsane, sane, (.*)sane(.*)

When I try to scan from within a vmware box, the scan happens without
problems, so I think we can rule out any issues with the scanner itself.

I can't think of anything which could have broken my SANE setup. The
biggest thing I've done to my box in the meantime has been to install a
couple of minor apps which forced an upgrade from XFree86 to Xorg.

Any suggestions?
