Just a note for anyone following, I got this machine today. So far, it's been
running like a dream in Ubuntu AMD64. The worst problem is that I couldn't
get my sound going. This was eventually solved by plugging in my speakers
(which I'd unplugged while disentangeling cables). The second problem is that
the graphics card wouldn't listen to what refresh rate I told it. My guess is
that it was asking my monitor what it could do, and my monitor was
saying 'sure, go for 85, I can take it'. However, my monitor starts to get
blurry at that refresh rate, and so I typically drop it down to 75. No matter
what I said in xorg.conf, it wouldn't change. This has been temporarily
solved by stealing my flatmate's LCD, and long term by ordering a nice, new
19" LCD for myself.
I have tried to get Xgl/Compiz going, with no real success so far. I'll try
more tomorrow. I also haven't tried to get 32-bit closed-source things going
yet (like w32codecs and flash).
Robin.
