Check your hardware. Start by running memtest86. I wouldn't be surprised to 
find you have a hardware fault somewhere that is causing the kernel to get 
all turned about.

That's a pretty old kernel, even my Debian stable server is running 2.6.8, it 
might be worth trying to update if you can.
