I have to say, I hated Cyrus when I was using it properly.  My advice is do
not even think about using it if you have accounts/home directories on the
machine -  use Courier or Dovecot.  However, if you need to have a "black
box" that authenticates off something and speaks just IMAP/POP, Cyrus is
great.  It's unsurprising that it forms the base for projects such as
Zimbra.
