The engine isn't the issue; mplayer, ffmpeg, xine, VLC, gstreamer, any
engine can play almost any video with the right plugins or codecs, it
just comes down to what is legally redistributable/licensed.

(Also, while wajig seems like a good idea, not many people use it [to my
knowledge], and your options for support with it might be limited
compared to the standard tools, apt-get/aptitude.)
