I suggest you install the free VMware Server, create a virtual machine
with two virtual disks on the same channel (e.g. 2x2GB), do a very basic
install of linux and then play with mdadm and moving disks around to see
how exactly it behaves. BTW Make a snapshot after install so that you
can easily go back to the last working state without reinstallation if
something goes way too wrong. Once you've gained enough experience on
this sandpit go ahead and do the same on your real system.
Worked for me few weeks ago when I needed to rescue a failed RAID on a
remote system and wasn't sure how nasty can I be to it without losing
data ;-)
