Maybe its a little controversial for an open source mailing list but  
I say take a look at Hamachi:

It is not open source but it is very powerful, widely used and  
ploughs through firewalls like a hot knife through butter :-)

You won't find in any Debian repository but I've found installation  
and setup to be straightforward and there is no messing about with  
key generation or firewalls like other alternatives.
