I use OpenVPN on both Windows and Linux clients, with the server being Linux,
and it works great. The bit quoted is very important however, many VPN
programs use IPSec which requires special IP protocols to be used. Most home
ADSL routers don't understand any IP protocols other than TCP, UDP and a
little bit of ICMP, so you're usually out of luck if you need to use them.
OpenVPN avoids these issues quite nicely (and once set up, it runs along
quite well with zero maintenence)
