Try XFCE then. There's even an official Ubuntu distro called Xubuntu
that you can install on top of the Gnome version:

vik at vik:~$ apt-cache search xubuntu
xubuntu-artwork-usplash - Xubuntu usplash image
xubuntu-default-settings - default settings for Xubuntu
xubuntu-desktop - Xubuntu desktop system
xubuntu-docs - xubuntu documentation
xubuntu-live - Xubuntu live system
xubuntu-system-tools - graphical system administration tools for Xubuntu
xubuntu-artwork - Xubuntu themes and artwork

Historians now believe the iBusiness trend was started by sleepy vi
users who had forgotten they were already in insert mode. Foisting a
patented Buzzword on the internet-hungry masses of the late 20th century
was, after all, far easier than the keystrokes required to remove the
extra letter.
