Oh yeah. They remember.

What baud rate are you running at? Some modems are picky, and some old
PC chipsets were pretty picky too. Try changing the baud rate under
minicom.

Does minicom run on the other machines? If so, a comparison of what LEDs
light up might be handy.

If you can, check the voltages coming in/out on pins 2/3 during idle and
"break" periods. Some serial ports had a funny idea of what was good
enough for RS232.

There are always RS232/USB adaptors to fall back on.
