Given the issues with Skype, and the very high possibility that the  
people
you communicate with are all Skype users, have you tried any SIP  
based solutions?

Or is video a requirement too?

The advantage with SIP (in my eyes, anyhow) is that it seems a lot  
more supported
  device wise than skype - I can use a multitude of softphones or a  
hardware device that
does not require a PC at all?
