As opposed to Maildir, which was qmail's own special mail format :-)

Maildir is very good for reliable _delivery_, which is what qmail is 
for, but I'm not convinced that it's all that good for an IMAP 
datastore. Metadata is encoded in the filename (i.e. is the item 
unread?), and that makes it difficult to use file-level synchronisation 
tools (rsync, unison).
