Fortunately faad does work, and that's what I've used.

I've hacked bashpodder to download m4a files and convert them to mp3s.
The hacked version also withstands sites redirecting to new
repositories. All today's retrieved files go in a folder "today", and
archives are kept. If anyone wants a copy, let me know.

I've also written an accompanying utility cp2sd.sh that copies as much
as it can onto an SD or USB storage device. Any excess goes into a
"backlog" folder, which is added to the next attempt at copying to the
SD card.

All done in bash!
